Fallen Angel
by Tess Harper

the warmth of honest love

This day I was walking
with my light hoofed step
and I tripped on an old root
While smiling to a sweet face.

And things mended.

Next blood gushed from my toe
in the water
as I struggled to retract my leg
from where it decided to go.

Love! Love me!
What was that for, God?

And so I walk light hoofed
but with more intention,
and to help kitties in the dark
S M A S H my toes into the brick,
the pain progresses up me to my ankles,
my earth anchors.

OK God, I hear you.
Why are you smashing my delicates to smitherines?
Why are you punishing?
I must be bad very very bad.
I must be on the wrong path.

I name myself ugly name "Gretta the Toeless"

And then one morning when the moon was croning and all was dark, he whispered:

"You've forgotten about the wings on your back."

And the angels laugh.
I laugh.
And God grins.
