Hurrah for Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift!
'A Talk Over Tea Can Change a Nation'
by Wendy Stevens
Jane
Swift became the Governor of Massachusetts on April 10, 2001 when
Governor Paul Cellucci resigned to become the U.S. Ambassador to
Canada. The amount of good that this woman is doing in government
is astounding. From funding women's shelters to reducing coal emissions,
to saving rivers and conserving land, this woman is a great role
model in government. Below are four shining
examples.
Work hard and stick to your guns, girls, and
we can make the world a better place! Great things can be accomplished
by taking one step at a time, and having confidence in each and
every step.

"Today we are helping to restore the Blackstone
River to its natural beauty," said Swift, speaking at the
Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park during a day-long
tour of the region with her Cabinet members. "A lot of hard
work has stopped the flow of untreated industrial waste and we
must now concentrate our efforts on reclaiming what was lost.
By restoring or replacing wetlands, we will allow for the return
of fish and wildlife and help make the river an attraction for
individuals and their families."
Governor Swift Celebrates
Protection of 50,000 Acres of Farmland

Westport Rivers Winery Land Among the Most Recently Protected
WESTPORT Governor Jane Swift today celebrated the protection
of 50,000 acres of prime Massachusetts farmland by visiting 230
acres of land recently
protected at Westport Rivers Winery and Vineyard as part of the
Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) program.
"The APR program allows family farms that might
otherwise go out of business continue to be productive parts of
the Massachusetts economy and the cultural landscape," said
Swift, during a day-long tour of Southeastern Massachusetts as
part of her Administrations Cabinet Day. "The preservation
of these farms speaks to the quality of life that people find
so appealing in Massachusetts."

Salem Harbor Station Makes Emission
Reduction Efforts
12/26/2001
The operator of the station announced today
that the station has abandoned plans to build a new coal burner.
This is being called a major victory for environmentalists! As
a result, harmful emissions will be reduced. Residents will literally
breath easier here. What comes out of the stacks will be a lot
cleaner. It will also consider using natural gas and oil. It will
add pollution control to its existing stacks, reducing its' emissions
by 55 to 60%.
The environmentalists are hoping that the plant
eventually starts using natural gas as it is at other plants.
They have none of the toxics like mercury and arsenic. They cut
down global warming emissions by 2/3rds. Ultimately, these changes
will reduce emissions by 80%.
It is reported that these efforts by the Salem Harbor
Station could not be done without the aid of Massachusetts Governor
Jane Swift. It was also mentioned that Governor Swift made more
efforts than any prior Governor to clean up the Salem Harbor Station.
