Today
My Heart Played Note C
by Athena Witherspoon
More
on Kindness
Today
I spent the morning doing some holiday shopping. I wandered through a few stores,
exchanging pleasantries with store clerks while they merrily swiped my credit
card. A few hours of shopping, and I was ready for lunch. I got into my
Jeep and began the holiday wade through traffic, making a slow progression to
the nearest food establishment.
While driving
down a busy road in heavy traffic, a car next to me stopped in the middle of the
road, honking at the car in front of me. The car had a handicapped symbol on the
license plate. An elderly woman was hollering to the handicapped vehicle, pointing
at the car. Finally, I heard the woman say 'You want me to get it for you?'. The
woman got out of her car and removed a small pocketbook perched on the snowy bumper
of the vehicle in front of me, handing it to the driver. I could hear the driver,
'Oh thank you, thank you!!!'. Her arms were flinging about in all directions in
gratitude. I had just witnessed one of those rare random acts of kindness that
usually go unnoticed.
A
small hum began in the pit of my stomach. A tiny sensation was spiraling upward...
until it reached my heart and sang Note C. The feeling continued all the way through
and up to my head, vibrating to the tips of my ears! It was like a clear Note
C with butterflies. Kindness is such a simple thing so simple we often look
right past. Its very powerful because it is Self-empowering. Helping others is
sometimes the best way to help ourSelves. The light turned green and all had to
go. I could still see the swirl of kindness around both drivers, increasing both
of their energies.
After
a morning of exchanging pleasantries and smiling nods with store clerks, a true
shot of Kindness struck right through my being. Who would jump out of their vehicle
in heavy traffic to retrieve a pocketbook off of another vehicle's
bumper? Not everyone. This good deed is a shining example of kindness, and a stark
contrast to what is said today about American Society.
I
must say, in our times, when the media talks of burglaries, murders, terrorism,
and only all of the most terrible events, we as humans have a lot more decency
than they would elude to. I wish that media would cover the more positive and
kind side of humans, rather than stir the pot of negativity until it comes to
a boil.
