Catnip Tea - This is the old standby for both child and
parent during the teething times. Catnip is soothing to the nervous system
and helps relieve acute pain. It is also helpful for teething-related
fevers. Administer as tea or tincture in frequent small doses. The tea
itself is not tasty, so you may wish to formulate it with other gentle
nervines such as chamomile, roses, passionflower, or lemon balm. Dr. Jethro
Kloss, a famous herbalist and doctor of the early 1900s, spoke impassionately
of catnip: "If every mother would have catnip on her shelf, it would
save her many a sleepless night and her chid much suffering." It
was particularly thoughtful of him to consider the mother and, following
his advice, I always suggest catnip and passionflower tea for parents
of teething children.
